Frequently asked questions about Drop-In Visits

Every fur-baby has unique needs, and we're here to provide care that's tailored to them. Browse our frequently asked questions below to learn more about our Drop-In Visit services and how we help keep your pets happy, comfortable, and cared for while you're away!

What is a drop-in?

A drop-in is a scheduled visit to your home where we provide care for your pets while you’re away. During these visits, we can provide feeding, fresh water, medication administration if needed, potty breaks, litter box cleaning, and playtime or companionship depending on your pet’s needs.

What’s the difference between drop-ins and overnight care?

Drop-ins are scheduled visits throughout the day where we stop by your home to provide care for your pets. During these visits, we handle things like feeding, fresh water, potty breaks, medication administration, litter box cleaning, and playtime depending on your pet’s needs. Each visit lasts for the amount of time you book (15, 30, 45, or 60 minutes), and many clients schedule multiple visits per day while they are away.

Overnight care, on the other hand, includes staying in your home with your pets for the evening or an extended 24-hour period. This service provides more continuous supervision, companionship, and routine care, making it ideal for pets who experience separation anxiety, require frequent attention, or simply do better when someone is present overnight.

How long are drop-in visits? How many should I schedule per day?

We offer 15, 30, 45, and 60-minute drop-ins so pet parents can choose the level of care that best fits their pets and household. Shorter visits are great for quick feedings or potty breaks, while longer visits allow for more playtime, attention, and care for multiple pets.

As far as how many visits you should schedule, that depends on your pet’s routine! Most dogs typically require 2–3 visits per day, while cats may only require 1–2 visits daily depending on their needs. We’re happy to help recommend a schedule that works best for your pet.

Will I receive updates during drop-ins?

Yes! We know how important it is to stay connected with your pets while you’re away. During drop-ins, we send detailed updates and pictures/videos via text, email, or your preferred method to let you know how your pet is doing, including potty breaks, meals, and any fun moments or observations.

What happens if my pet has an emergency while I’m away?

Your pet’s safety is our top priority. In the unlikely event of an emergency, we will immediately contact you or your emergency contact and, if necessary, take your pet to the nearest veterinary clinic for urgent care. As a retired and practicing veterinary technician team, our team is CPR and First Aid certified, and we’re trained to handle a wide range of medical situations and provide first aid while ensuring your pet gets the care they need.

Are walks included with drop-ins?

Yes! Walks can absolutely be included as part of your Drop-In Visit. The length of the walk will depend on the duration of the visit you've selected, while allowing enough time for any additional requested care, such as feeding, refreshing water, medication administration, litter box maintenance, enrichment, and plenty of love and attention.

If your pet would benefit from more outdoor time, additional time may be added to your visit, subject to availability.

Can you administer medications during a drop-in?

Absolutely! Basic medication administration, such as oral medications, topical medications, and other routine treatments, can typically be accommodated during your scheduled Drop-In Visit at no additional charge.

Pets requiring more advanced or time-intensive medical care, multiple medications, injectable medications (such as insulin), or specialized treatments may be subject to an additional Medical Care fee. We'll discuss your pet's individual needs during your Meet & Greet to ensure we provide safe, personalized care and determine whether an add-on is necessary.

Can you care for multiple pets in one household?

Absolutely. We regularly care for households with multiple pets, including combinations of dogs, cats, and other small animals. Because pet parents usually tend to book several drop-ins per day, we do not charge an additional fee for multiple pets in the household.

Are meet-and-greets required before booking drop-ins?

Yes. All new clients must schedule a complimentary meet-and-greet before services can begin. This allows us to meet your pets, review their routine, and ensure we have everything needed to provide proper care.

What should I prepare before my scheduled visit?

We ask that food, medications, leashes, litter supplies, and other necessary items be clearly accessible before the visit. Having supplies ready helps us spend more time caring for your pets instead of searching for items around the home. We will also ask for written instructions for feeding schedules, medication times, and emergency contacts/preferred veterinarians to help ensure your pet receives the best possible care.

Do I need to pay a deposit for drop-ins?

No deposit is required for standard drop-ins. Payment can be made at the time of service or weekly for recurring visits, depending on your preference. Because drop-ins are shorter visits, this helps keep the booking process simple and flexible for both you and your pet. For larger bookings scheduled far in advance, we may discuss a deposit on a case-by-case basis to secure your dates.

Why do you only provide Drop-In Visits in select areas of Bergen County?

Our Drop-In Visits are intentionally limited to select areas of Bergen County so we can provide dependable, timely service without compromising the quality of care your pet receives.

Because Drop-In Visits are scheduled throughout the day, keeping our service area focused allows us to minimize travel time, remain on schedule, and be available for clients when they need us most. It also ensures we can dedicate more time to caring for your pets rather than sitting in traffic.

If you're located just outside our standard service area, we'd still love to hear from you! Depending on our schedule and travel distance, we may be able to accommodate your request for an additional Extended Service Area fee.

There's no place like home—especially for your pet.

Our 24-Hour Overnight Sitting service provides your pet with around-the-clock companionship and personalized care in the comfort of their own home. Rather than adjusting to the unfamiliar sights, sounds, and routines of a boarding facility, your pet can remain in the environment they know and love while receiving dedicated, one-on-one attention throughout the day and night.

Whether you're away for a weekend getaway, business trip, or extended vacation, we'll maintain your pet's normal routine with meals, walks, playtime, enrichment, medication administration (if needed), and plenty of love and companionship, giving you complete peace of mind while you're away.

Servicing Bergen County, Passaic County, Hudson County, Selective Parts of Essex County, & NYC (Travel fees may apply)

24-Hour Overnight Sitting

When you welcome Bark & Broom Pet Care into your home, you're trusting us with more than just your pet—you're trusting us with your family's routine, your home, and your peace of mind. We stay with your pet for the majority of the day and night, following their normal routine as closely as possible with meals, potty breaks, walks (if requested), medication administration, enrichment, playtime, and plenty of love and attention.

While you're away, you'll receive regular photo and video updates, along with personalized summaries so you can stay connected with your pet every step of the way. We also treat your home with the same care and respect as our own by bringing in mail and packages, rotating lights, watering indoor plants upon request, managing trash and recycling, and keeping pet areas neat and tidy. Our goal is simple: to provide exceptional care for your pet and complete peace of mind for you until you're home again.

Frequently asked questions about Overnight Care

Leaving your best friend in someone else's care is a big decision. Our frequently asked questions are here to help you better understand our 24-Hour Overnight Sitting, from daily routines and home care to updates, scheduling, and everything in between.

What is included in 24-Hour Overnight Sitting?

Our 24-Hour Overnight Sitting service includes personalized, in-home care tailored to your pet's routine. Services may include feeding, fresh water, potty breaks, walks (if requested), playtime, enrichment, medication administration (if needed), overnight companionship, and regular photo and video updates. We also provide basic home care, such as bringing in mail and packages, watering indoor plants upon request, rotating lights, taking trash and recycling to the curb on collection days, and keeping pet areas neat and tidy. We will treat your fur-baby and home as if it's our own!

Will my pet be left alone?

Our goal is to provide your pet with consistent companionship throughout your reservation. While we remain with your pet for the majority of the day and night, brief departures may occasionally be necessary for personal errands, like food, replenishing clothing, etc. Pets are never left alone for extended periods, and any anticipated absences will be discussed with you before your reservation begins.

Will I receive updates during overnight stays?

Yes! We understand how important it is to stay connected with your pets while you’re away. During overnight care, we provide detailed updates via text, email, or your preferred method to let you know how your pet is doing, including meals, potty breaks, playtime, and any special notes about their behavior or comfort. You will receive at least 3 major updates per day (morning, noon, and bedtime updates).

Do you care for multiple pets?

Yes! We love multi-pet households and are happy to care for dogs, cats, and other companion animals. Overnight services cover care for all of the pets in your home. Because pet parents usually tend to book overnight care over an extended period of time, we do not charge an additional fee for multiple pets in the household.

Can you administer medications?

Yes. With our veterinary background, we are experienced in administering all types of medications and providing basic medical care. Please discuss your pet’s needs during the meet-and-greet so we can make sure we are the right fit!

Routine medications, including oral, topical, eye, and ear medications, are included when they can be safely administered. More advanced or time-intensive medical care may require our Medical Care Add-On, which will be discussed during your Meet & Greet.

What should I prepare before an overnight visit?

We ask that food, medications, leashes, and other necessary supplies be clearly accessible before the visit. Providing written instructions for feeding and walking schedules, medication times, and emergency contacts/preferred veterinarians helps ensure your pet receives the best possible care. Please also remember to include important household instructions!

We kindly request an area in the home where we can rest for the night. We bring our own food and supplies as to not incure any additonal costs to you as a homeowner.

Are meet-and-greets required before overnight bookings?

Yes! All new clients are required to schedule a meet-and-greet before overnight services can be confirmed. This allows us to meet your pet, learn their routine, review any medical needs, and ensure everyone feels comfortable before the stay begins.

Meet-and-greets are a complimentary service for New Jersey residents.

For clients located in NYC, a $50 Meet & Greet Travel Fee applies to help cover travel time and transportation costs. This fee is required at the time of booking your Meet & Greet.

How far in advance should I book overnight care?

Overnight stays tend to book quickly, especially during holidays and peak travel seasons. We recommend booking as early as possible to secure your preferred dates, as we book up quickly.

Do I need to pay a deposit to reserve overnight dates?

Yes. To officially reserve overnight care dates, we require a non-refundable 50% deposit at the time of booking. Because overnight services block off our schedule and often prevent us from accepting other requests, this deposit ensures your dates are secured. The remaining balance is due 24 hours before the service. If plans change, we understand that life happens, but the deposit is generally non-refundable due to the reserved time.

What areas do you provide Overnight Sitting in?

We currently offer Overnight Sitting throughout Bergen County, Passaic County, Hudson County, select areas of Essex County, Manhattan, and Brooklyn. Travel fees may apply for reservations in New York City or outside our standard service area.

What happens if my pet becomes ill or there is an emergency?

If your pet experiences a medical emergency, we'll make every reasonable effort to contact you immediately. If you're unavailable, we'll follow the emergency instructions you've provided and seek veterinary care if necessary. Your pet's health and safety will always be our top priority. As veterinary professionals, we are CPR & First Aid certified, and will triage as needed to get your pet to their nearest clinic/hospital.

Can you care for my home while I'm away?

Yes! While your pet is our primary focus, we're happy to help keep your home looking lived in and well maintained by bringing in mail and packages, rotating lights, watering indoor plants upon request, managing trash and recycling, and keeping pet-related areas tidy. We will go above and beyond to ensure your home is spotless by the time of your return!

What happens if my travel plans change or my return home is delayed?

We understand that travel plans don't always go as expected. If your return is delayed due to a flight cancellation, traffic, weather, or another unexpected circumstance, please let us know as soon as possible. We'll do our best to extend your reservation based on our availability so your pet continues to receive uninterrupted care.

If an extension is possible, additional overnight or hourly charges may apply depending on the length of your requested stay. While we cannot guarantee availability beyond your original reservation, we'll always work with you to find the best solution for you and your pet.

Terms & Conditions

Deposit Policy

To reserve overnight services with Bark & Broom Pet Care, a 50% non-refundable deposit is required at the time of booking. These bookings reserve dedicated time in our schedule and often prevent us from accepting other requests.

Your reservation is not considered officially booked until the deposit has been received and the booking has been approved. The remaining balance is due 24 hours before the service.

While deposits are generally non-refundable, we understand that emergencies can happen and may review special circumstances on a case-by-case basis.

Cancellation Policy

We understand that plans can change, and we do our best to remain flexible while also maintaining a reliable schedule for all of our clients.

We kindly ask clients to please notify us with at least 72 hours’ notice for cancellations for both overnights and drop-ins if possible. These services require schedule blocks that are often reserved well in advance.

Overnight Clients: Deposits are non-refundable, even if the service is cancelled.

Drop-In Clients: If a cancellation occurs outside of the required notice period, any future drop-ins will require a non-refundable deposit.

We always strive to be understanding when unexpected situations arise and will work with clients whenever possible.

Behavior Policy

The safety and well-being of both your pet and our team is our top priority. We reserve the right to decline overnight or drop-in service requests if a pet displays aggressive behavior and/or is extremely difficult to handle on the leash during a meet-and-greet.

This policy ensures that all pets receive safe, stress-free care and that our team can provide attentive, professional service without risk of injury. If a dog is deemed unsafe for walks and general care, we will discuss alternative options, such as one-on-one training recommendations.

Please understand that this policy is in place because we are not professional trainers and are not equipped to manage severe behavioral issues safely. This ensures that all pets receive stress-free, attentive care and that our team can provide services without risk of injury.

Vaccination Requirement Policy

For the health and safety of all pets, clients, and staff, Bark & Broom Pet Care requires that all pets receiving services be current on their veterinarian-recommended core vaccinations appropriate for their species, age, and lifestyle. Dogs should, at a minimum, be current on rabies, distemper/parvovirus (DHPP), and any vaccinations required by state or local law. Cats should be current on rabies and FVRCP, as recommended by their veterinarian.

Clients agree to provide accurate vaccination information upon request and to notify Bark & Broom Pet Care if their pet's vaccination status changes. We reserve the right to decline, suspend, or discontinue services for any pet that does not meet our vaccination requirements or whose vaccination status cannot be verified.

Exceptions may be considered for pets with a documented medical exemption provided by a licensed veterinarian. Such exceptions are evaluated on a case-by-case basis and may be subject to additional safety requirements or service limitations.

Meet-and-Greet Policy

At Bark & Broom Pet Care, we require a meet-and-greet for all new clients before services begin. This visit allows us to get to know you and your pet, review your pet’s routine, discuss any medical needs or behavioral considerations, and ensure that everyone feels comfortable moving forward.

Meet-and-greets typically last about 20–30 minutes and take place in your home so we can see where supplies such as leashes, food, medications, and other essentials are kept. This also gives your pet a chance to become familiar with us in their own environment and also gives us a chance to assess how your pup does on walks with someone other than their parent.

Meet-and-greets are complimentary to NJ residents. For NYC residents, a $50 meet-and-greet travel fee applies to help cover travel time and transportation costs.

Meet-and-greets are an important step in providing safe and reliable care. For this reason, we ask that clients are prepared to discuss their pet’s routine and expectations for the requested services. Services may not be confirmed until the meet-and-greet has been completed and approved.

If additional meet-and-greets are requested after the initial visit, they may be subject to a small service fee.

Client Responsibility

Clients are responsible for providing safe and reliable access to the home (key, lockbox, or entry instructions).

For overnight services, we are responsible for bringing our own supplies, items, and food into your home so there is no additional cost to you as a homeowner. However, clients are responsible for providing a place to sleep, such as a guestroom or an area in the house with sleeping arrangements.

For all drop-in services, all pet items, including food, treats, leashes, harnesses, preferred cleaning products, comfort items, or medications, must be laid out to be ready for use before your departure. Clients should also provide detailed care instructions to ensure consistency and accuracy of care.

During drop-in visits and overnight care services, clients must inform us in advance if any other individuals (family members, friends, maintenance workers, etc.) will be entering the home. For safety, privacy, and liability reasons, no unannounced entry is permitted while services are being provided. Failure to communicate this may result in immediate discontinuation of services.

Force Majeure

The safety of our clients, their pets, and our team is always our highest priority. While we make every reasonable effort to provide scheduled services, Bark & Broom Pet Care cannot guarantee service when circumstances beyond our control make travel or care unsafe or impossible.

This includes, but is not limited to, severe weather, flooding, hurricanes, tornadoes, snowstorms, ice, natural disasters, widespread power outages, road closures, government-declared emergencies, or other unforeseen events ("Acts of God").

If a scheduled service must be delayed, modified, or canceled due to these circumstances, we will notify you as soon as possible and work with you to determine the safest and most appropriate course of action. Bark & Broom Pet Care shall not be held liable for delays, interruptions, or the inability to perform services resulting from circumstances beyond our reasonable control.
